A former champion swimmer in his homeland of Greece and a psychology major at the University of Minnesota, Yanni would eventually veer down an entirely different career path – music. Even without formal training, Yanni taught himself how to play the piano and keyboards and composed his own work to boot. After playing with local Rock bands, including Archangel, Straight Up, and Chameleon, Yanni packed his bags and headed to Los Angeles to focus on a career as a solo contemporary instrumentalist.
By 1987, Yanni teamed up with John Tesh and Charlie Adams; the small band went on tour in support of Yanni’s early instrumental albums, including Keys to Imagination, Out of Silence, and Chameleon Days. In 2002, Yanni released his first Grammy-nominated work Dare to Dream, featuring the song “Aria.” A second Grammy-nominated album In My Time would follow soon enough in 1993.
It would take Yanni Live at the Acropolis to catapult Yanni to commercial success in 1994. The concert was filmed in Athens, Greece, broadcast on PBS back in the U.S., and seen by billions of people. Compositions such as “Acroyali/Standing In Motion” have become favorites of fans with Yanni tickets. In 1997, Yanni performed and recorded his next live album and video Tribute at India’s Taj Mahal and China’s Forbidden City.
After two years, Yanni returned with If I Could Tell You, his first studio album in several years. In support of album Ethnicity, Yanni launched one of the most successful concert tours of 2003-04. With the Yanni Live Tour and Yanni Live! The Concert Event album and video doing well, Yanni continued to ride high on success. The 2008 stunning release Yanni Voices and his autobiography have kept Yanni fresh in fans’ minds. With new album Truth of Touch in stores, tour dates have been scheduled throughout 2011.
