NEW ORLEANS – In NFL Week 16, the New Orleans Saints (7-8) hosted the Philadelphia Eagles (7-8) inside the Louisiana Superdome Sunday.

Who Came, Saw, and Conquered: Already out of the playoff hunt, the Eagles delivered a crushing 38-23 blow to the NFC-Wild-Card-hopeful Saints. Surprisingly, the ol’ black and gold still have a chance (albeit a slim one) to make the playoffs, needing a Week 17 win over the Bears along with losses by the Redskins AND Vikings.
Lookin’ Good: Eagles offense
In a game where RB Brian Westbrook was rockin’ the run game with 100 yards rushing and QB Donovan McNabb was rollin’ in and out of the pocket for 300 total yards, the Eagles offense lit up the scoreboard, outscoring the Saints’ prolific passing game and exploiting the Saints’ depleted defense with ease.
Seen Better Days: Saints run game
With a slew of aching backs – Deuce McAllister (torn ACL), Reggie Bush (knee injury), and now reserve Jamaal Branch (fractured right leg) – already sidelined, the Saints could muster up only 65 yards rushing Sunday. With a playoff spot on the line and Bush’s return still questionable for the game against the Bears, the Saints will turn to RB Aaron Stecker to carry the load in the backfield once again.
Keep an Eye On: Eagles QB Donovan McNabb
After a stellar performance – 263 yards passing, 37 yards rushing, three TDs, and a 119.1 passer rating – McNabb has certainly quieted rumors about backup QB Kevin Kolb taking the QB reigns in 2008. Recovering from last season’s knee surgery and a midseason ankle sprain, the McNabb of old is back and reportedly has never felt better – and it shows.
Week 17 Watch: New England Patriots (15-0) v. New York Giants (10-5)
The Patriots are ready to wreak havoc on the record books with a chance to go a perfect 16-0 in the regular season for the first time in history. Pats QB Tom Brady needs only one TD pass to tie Peyton Manning’s record of 49 set in 2004, while WR Randy Moss needs just one TD reception to tie Jerry Rice’s single-season record of 22 set in 1987. Prepare for what could be a truly historical game as the Giants host the Patriots inside Giants Stadium Saturday. |
