1999 was a big year for festivals as it saw the return of Woodstock on the East Coast. 1999 was also the inaugural year of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held at Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California. The then-two-day Coachella Festival took place in October and featured such artists as Ben Harper, Beck, Morrissey, Tool and Rage Against the Machine. At a time when Woodstock was criticized for overcharging ticketholders for water, Coachella gave water away for free.
It would be two years until Coachella’s promoters planned another festival. In 2001, Coachella was moved from October to April, in order to take advantage of cooler desert temperatures. The 2001 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival featured Aphex Twin, Mos Def, The Chemical Brothers and Jane’s Addiction. By 2002, Coachella hit its stride with the reunited Siouxsie & the Banshees, Foo Fighters, Bjork and Oasis.
Also in 2002, Coachella offered concertgoers the option of on-site camping. Coachella’s camping option was a huge success with over 10,000 people taking advantage. Coachella’s campgrounds offer unique amenities including shower trucks with private stalls, a karaoke tent and general store. In 2007, Coachella expanded to a three-day festival and showcased the reunions of the Jesus and Mary Chain, Crowded House and Rage Against the Machine.
The 2008 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival continued on as a three-day festival and featured the reunion of the bands Portishead and Love and Rockets. The 2008 Coachella Festival also included artists Fatboy Slim, Death Cab for Cutie and Kraftwerk. Concertgoers can only imagine what is in store for the 2014 Coachella festival.
