The Columbus Crew are one of the 10 original teams in the MLS. Created on June 14, 1994 by Lamar Hunt, the Crew made history in 1999 by constructing Columbus Crew Stadium, the country’s first major league stadium built specifically for soccer. Since then, many teams started following the Columbus Crew’s steps, making soccer a bigger sport phenomenon in the US.
One of the biggest acquisitions in MLS for the 2008 season was Guillermo Barros Schelotto, a player who has won it all in South America with Boca Juniors. Barros Schelotto wanted more playing time and after reviewing the offer made by the Columbus Crew, Schelotto will suit up in the Columbus black and gold. Since Barros Schelotto’s first game, he has been a leader and a fan favorite to boot.
Alejandro Moreno and Robbie Rogers make Columbus Crew a very aggressive team. Both players have scoring abilities and move well in open spaces. Moreno has been in the league for six years, while Rogers’ second season in the MLS makes him a new player in the league. Captain and leader Frankie Hedjuk will make sure Rogers learns fast en route to a winning season.
