Taken under the nurturing wings of Bluegrass founders like Bill Monroe, the natural talent of Del McCoury was amplified by the proximity to greatness. Working in such legendary acts as the Bluegrass Boys, Del McCoury was at the heart of the revolution in Country Music that would eventually push the musical style past a regional art form to the worldwide musical phenomenon it is today.

After parting ways will Bill Monroe, Del McCoury went through many bands in his search for a stable lineup. He finally discovered a good band with Del McCoury & the Dixie Pals. Staying together for more than 20 years the group would eventually become the Del McCoury Band. After making classic Bluegrass albums through the 1980s and 1990s, Del McCoury would experience possibly the greatest creative point in his career when he worked with controversial singer/songwriter Steve Earle.

The duo of Del McCoury and Steve Earle united for one of the greatest albums in Bluegrass history with the 1999 album The Mountain. Featuring many guests like Emmy Lou Harris and Jerry Douglas along with the lyrics of Del McCoury The Mountain was as star studded as an album could possibly be. The closing track “Pilgrim” was an excellent coda to the magnum opus that the Del McCoury Band put together.
