It is time once again to support Florida Atlantic University sports! FAU has a wide array of sports to enjoy like golf, soccer, tennis, and swimming in addition to old favorites like baseball, basketball, and football. Head coach Howard Schnellenberger is credited with building the FAU Owls football team from the ground up, even raising $15 million for the Owls since his term as Owls head coach began in 1999.
The Florida Atlantic Owls football team strolled comfortably toward victory last season with an 8-5 regular season record before exiting the Sun Belt Conference as champions with a 6-1 record. Finally, FAU played the New Orleans Bowl against the University of Memphis Tigers and prevailed 44-27. Junior Owls quarterback Rusty Smith threw five touchdowns during the New Orleans Bowl, winning game MVP as well as Sun Belt Player of the Year. As the 2008-09 season begins, prOWLers won’t want to miss games on the road and at home at Lockhart Stadium.
The Florida Atlantic Owls basketball team suffered a 15-18 regular season and an 8-10 ranking in the Sun Belt Conference. With the hiring of former St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis, many are hoping that the Owls will over come last year’s disappointing season. Junior Carlos Monroe is considered a power forward and averaged 15.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
FAU’s rivalry with Florida International University began only six years ago during a Don Shula Bowl football match-up in which FAU won 31-21. The fight continues between these two Miami-area colleges.
