Gipsy Kings formed in the south of France by Romani Brothers Nicolas, Paul, Canut, Patchai and Andre Reyes and their cousins Jacques, Maurice and Tonino Baliardo in 1979. Originally called “Los Reyes” (The Kings), the band played weddings, festivals and other gatherings. The band renamed itself “Gipsy Kings” because of its nomadic lifestyle. Gipsy Kings released its first album Allegria in 1982. The album Luna de Fuego followed in 1983.
Until 1988, Gipsy Kings played traditional flamenco music. Gipsy Kings’ 1988 self-titled album marked a change in the group’s sound. No longer true to pure flamenco music, Gipsy Kings fused their sound with pop, rock, Latin American and Middle Eastern sounds. Gipsy Kings’ unique sound brought them major success upon the release of the album’s first two singles “Bomboleo” and “Djobi Djoba,” especially in their home country France.
Gipsy Kings’ next album Mosaique produced the No. 1 Latin single “Volare” and the Top 5 Latin track “Vamos a Bailar.” In 1991, Gipsy Kings released Este Mundo, which broke into the Billboard 200 and produced the Top 10 Latin single “Baila Me.” The following year Gipsy Kings released Live!, which was recorded during their Este Mundo tour and produced two Top 25 Latin singles “Sin Ella” and “Quiero Saber.”
In 1997, the Gipsy Kings song “Ami Wa Wa (Solo Por Ti),” from the album Compas, was their last Top 25 single. In 2001, Gipsy Kings released Somos Gitanos (We are Gypsies), which was followed by the acoustic album Unplugged. Gipsy Kings released their latest album Pasajero in 2006, featuring the song “Café.” Don’t miss out on all the flamenco excitement. Order your Gipsy Kings concert tickets from OnlineTickets.com!
