Originally founded in 1977 to join in the popular wave of British punk, The Police quickly set themselves apart from the scene by adding reggae to their collection of styles. The deep and dark lyrics of The Police’s first singles “Roxanne” and “Can’t Stand Losing You” seemed to doom them to obscurity early, but a low budget U.S. tour gave the Police a strong following. Singles “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon” pushed the Police into stardom, while the next album Zenyatta Mondatta went platinum.
Ghost in the Machine was the next album by the Police and though it was successful it really served to set up the masterpiece Synchrocity. Catapulted by trademark single “Every Breath You Take,” Synchrocity would go multi-platinum and “Every Breath You Take” would endure as a classic song to this day. The Police would disband in 1985, leaving fans worldwide holding their breaths for a highly anticipated Police reunion.
To celebrate their 30th anniversary, The Police reunited for a world tour in 2007. The reunion tour would gross more than $300 million in ticket sales and continued into 2008 due to such high demand.
