Conference USA was founded in 1995 when the Metro Conference merged with the Great Midwest conference to develop a 12-team conference that sponsored NCAA football. Like many major conferences, C-USA suffered when five C-USA members left for the Big East. Since this major blow, Conference USA has lured six teams from other conferences and adopted a two-division alignment.

C-USA West boasts elite college football programs that have won conference championships, been ranked nationally, and produced numerous All-Americans and Heisman trophy winners. The intense interdivisional rivalry between the University of Houston Cougars and Rice University Owls has treated many Houston-area football fans to numerous exciting games. On the hardwood, C-USA basketball teams produce championship-caliber teams year after year. The UH Cougars produced NBA stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler of the famed Phi Slamma Jamma teams of the early 1980s. The Phi Slamma Jamma Cougars changed the way college basketball was played. The Texas Western (now UTEP) Miners won a historic National Championship in 1966 with five African-American players. Throughout their history C-USA West institutions have established new boundaries for NCAA basketball.
