In 1947 a number of institutions in the Great Lakes Region joined together to charter the Mid-American Conference. Now the Mid-American Conference sponsors 12 full member institutions and four affiliate schools who compete at the top level in a wide array of sports. The Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame was established in 1987 making it the first conference Hall of Fame in Division I sports.

Since 1997 the Mid-American Conference has adopted division play in football. Temple University recently joined the Mid-American East as a football-only member.
