Born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Chris Daughtry began singing in bands professionally at the age of 16 while still in high school. Chris Daughtry was heavily influenced by southern and grunge rock bands like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Live. In 2005, Chris Daughtry’s band Absent Element released the album Uprooted. The album contained two songs that eventually became the song “Breakdown,” which was released on Daughtry’s debut album in 2006.
In 2006, Chris Daughtry auditioned for the Fox television series American Idol. Chris Daughtry was a unique contestant who chose to play with a live band and play his own instrument, a trend that would continue on American Idol’s future seasons. On American Idol, Chris Daughtry performed popular renditions of Johnny Cash’s “I Walk The Line,” Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and Fuel’s “Hemorrhage (In My Hands).”
Chris Daughtry was cast off American Idol while in the Top 4. While his elimination was a surprise to many, including Chris Daughtry, American Idol’s loss was RCA record’s gain. RCA signed Chris Daughtry to a record deal. At the end of 2006, Chris Daughtry released his debut album Daughtry, which became the fastest selling record in SoundScan history, selling over 4 million copies and peaking at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart.
Daughtry’s first single “It’s Not Over” peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Top 40. Daughtry’s second single “Home” peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 and at No. 1 on Hot Adult Contemporary Charts. Chris Daughtry earned four Grammy nods and won three American Music Awards in 2007.
