The Honduran-born comedian Carlos Mencia was born Ned Arnel Mencia. Carlos Mencia grew up with his aunt and uncle in East Los Angeles. Carlos Mencia’s path to comedy success began after performing at the Laugh Factory’s Open Mic night. Carlos Mencia took his act to various comedy clubs around Los Angeles soon after. Eventually Carlos Mencia was chosen to perform on the television shows Arsenio Hall and Buscando Estrellas in the early 1990s.

By 1994, Carlos Mencia was chosen to host Loco Slam, HBO’s Latino comedy showcase.
In addition to hosting Funny is Funny on the Spanish language channel Galavision, Carlos Mencia embarked on the Three Amigos tour with Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco. Carlos Mencia was invited to do two HBO half-hour comedy specials. The second HBO special won Carlos Mencia a CableACE award for Best Standup Comedy Special. Carlos released the comedy album Take a Joke America in 2001.

The following year Carlos Mencia was chosen to appear in his own Comedy Central Presents special. In 2004, Comedy Central offered Carlos Mencia his own half-hour series modeled after Dave Chappelle’s Chappelle’s Show format. The show, Mind of Mencia, was a blend of sketch comedy and Carlos Mencia’s own stand up material. In 2006, Mind of Mencia was Comedy Central’s second highest rated show, behind South Park.

Mind of Mencia features Carlos Mencia’s brother Joseph in various roles, notably as a day laborer who teaches Americans to speak “Spanglish” in order to get a job.
