Aerosmith was formed in Boston, Massachusetts, by vocalist Steven Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer in 1971. Aerosmith released its first self-titled album on Columbia Records in 1973, featuring the song “Dream On.” It was Aerosmith’s third album Toys in the Attic in 1975 that catapulted Aerosmith to fame. Toys in the Attic featured the songs “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.”
The 1976 album Rocks was yet another platinum-selling record for the band. Rocks featured the hit singles “Last Child” and “Back in the Saddle.” Aerosmith made a cameo in the 1978 film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band starring Peter Frampton. In the film, Aerosmith performed its popular cover of the Beatles song “Come Together.” In 1987, Aerosmith released Permanent Vacation, which spawned the single “Dude (Looks Like a Lady).”
Pump hit the stores in 1989, and three Top 10 singles – "Janie's Got a Gun," "What It Takes" and "Love in an Elevator” – were quick to follow. Pump sold over seven million copies and won Aerosmith its first Grammy Award. In 1993, Aerosmith’s 11th studio album Get a Grip debuted at No. 1 and produced four Top 40 singles including “Livin’ on the Edge” and “Crazy.” In 1997, Aerosmith’s Nine Lives peaked at No. 1 and produced the singles “Hole in My Soul” and “Fallin’ in Love (Is Hard on the Knees).”
Aerosmith scored its first No. 1 single in 1998 with “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” from the Armageddon Soundtrack. After releasing album Honkin’ on Bobo in 2004 and touring the world in 2007, Aerosmith has taken some much-needed time off. Aerosmith has reached a new generation of fans through internet downloads and video game Guitar Hero to boot.
