Thanks to his father Mor Thiam, a famed jazz musician, Akon was immersed in music from an early age and learned to play several instruments. Building on this strong musical background, Akon recorded his first song at the age of 15. Akon blends smooth West African vocal rhythms and hip-hop beats to create a unique sound. It was this unique sound that put Akon on the radar of Universal Records executives.

A stint in prison inspired the hit song “Locked Up” from Akon’s debut album Trouble which was released in January 2004. “Locked Up” shot to the Top 10 in the US, catapulting Akon to international stardom. Trouble also spawned the hit single “Lonely”. Akon’s popularity increased after being featured on the song “Soul Survivor” with popular artist Young Jeezy.
