Alongside the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, Alice in Chains rose to fame as a pioneer in the Grunge movement. After inking a deal with Columbia Records in 1989, the band rolled into 1990 with the release of EP We Die Young and critically acclaimed debut album Facelift, a moody offering that captured the atmosphere of the Seattle Grunge scene. “Man in the Box” worked its way into heavy rotation on MTV and was followed by “Sea of Sorrow.”
Alice in Chains opened for the likes of Van Halen, Poison, Extreme, and Iggy Pop, but it wasn’t until the band snagged an opening slot for the Clash of the Titans featuring Anthrax, and Slayer the Metal world would be turned onto Alice in Chains. The band’s sophomore masterpiece Dirt dropped in 1992 and became its highest selling album, reaching quadruple-platinum status. Singles “Rooster,” “Them Bones,” and “Down in a Hole” rocked the charts, and made Alice in Chains a household name.
On the heels of Alice in Chains’ 1993 world tour, acoustic EP Jars of Flies was released and debuted at No. 1. Jars of Flies spawned the band’s sole No. 1 hit “No Excuses” and Top 10 follow-up “I Stay Away.” As vocalist Layne Staley’s continued to battle personal demons, Alice in Chains went on hiatus until 1995, when the band headed back to the studio to work on its self-titled effort. Alice in Chains debuted at No. 1 on the charts and produced four singles in “Grind,” “Again,” “Over Now,” and “Heaven Beside You.”
Alice in Chains would be the last album for the band with Staley, who ultimately lost the battle to drug addiction. The surviving members of Alice Chains went into hiatus, but would eventually reunite, playing the occasional benefit concert, festival dates, and a brief U.S. club tour. A new album titled Black Gives Way to Blue is set for release in Fall 2009, and single “A Looking in View” and “Check My Brain” are sure to be Rock-radio favorites.
