Anita Baker’s sultry, soulful voice was honed by years of singing in the gospel choir at church and performing in local bars. By 1975 Anita Baker auditioned for Chapter 8, one of Detroit’s most popular acts at the time. The audition was successful and Anita Baker joined Chapter 8 in time for the group to sign a record deal with Ariola Records and record an album in 1979. When the smaller record label was picked up by Arista Records, Chapter 8 was dropped from the label roster.

Down but not out, Anita Baker persevered through the disappointment and was soon signed to a small record label and began to record her debut album The Songstress. Though not a huge commercial success, The Songstress increased Anita Baker’s fan base and caught the attention of executives at Elektra Records.

After signing with Elektra, Anita Baker hit the ground running. Her major label debut Rapture yielded two instant classics “Caught up in the Rapture” and “Sweet Love”. Five albums and eight Grammy Awards after signing her first major label deal Anita Baker remains the Lady of Soul. 2004’s My Everything became Anita Baker’s introduction to a new generation of music fans and the reception was phenomenal.
