Armando Manzanero was born on December 7, 1935, in Merida, Mexico. Armando Manzanero’s introduction to music came in primary school. At age 15, Armando Manzanero composed the song “Nunca en el Mundo (Never in the World).” In hopes of furthering his musical career, Armando Manzanero moved to Mexico City. In 1957, Armando Manzanero signed with CBS International and began working as a pianist for other Spanish singers including Raphael and Pedro Vargas.
Armando Manzanero released his first album Mi Primera Grabación (My First Record) in 1960. Armando Manzanero won the top prize at the Festival de la Canción in 1965 with his song “Cuando Estoy Contigo (When I'm With You).” Armando Manzanero released his second album A Mi Amor... Con Mi Amor in 1967. In a stroke of both good and bad luck, Elvis composer Sid Wayne translated Armando Manzanero’s song “Somos Novios” which became the Grammy-nominated Perry Como song “It’s Impossible.”
However, Armando Manzanero was denied song royalties from “It’s Impossible” and was accused of plagiarism, even though Armando Manzanero had written the song years earlier. In recent years, Armando Manzanero has become an advocate for copyright law as vice president of the Mexican National Association of Authors and Composers. To date, Armando Manzanero has recorded over 30 albums and had hits with the songs “Voy a Apagar la Luz (I'm Going to Turn off the Lights),” “Contigo Aprendí,” “Esta Tarde Vi Llover” and “Nada Personal.”
In 2001, Armando Manzanero released Duetos, featuring all of his greatest hits paired with Spanish singers including Miguel Bose and Alejandro Sanz.
