In 1979, the Beastie Boys originally began as the punk-rock band the Young Aborigines. The Beastie Boys lineup consisted of Adam “MCA” Yauch on bass guitar, Kate Schellenbach on drums, John Berry on guitar and singer Michael “Mike D” Diamond. This Beastie Boys lineup recorded the EP Pollywog Stew in 1982. When guitarist John Berry left the group, he was replaced by Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz in 1983.
In 1984, Beastie Boys switched from punk rock to a rap trio with drummer Kate Schellenbach leaving the group. Beastie Boys spent 1985 opening for such diverse acts as Madonna, LL Cool J and Run DMC. In 1986, Beastie Boys released their first full-length album Licensed to Ill, which became the first rap album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Licensed to Ill spawned the hit singles “Fight for your Right,” “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” and “Brass Monkey.”
Beastie Boys released their legendary album Paul's Boutique in 1989, producing the hit single “Hey Ladies.” In 1994, Beastie Boys returned to the No. 1 spot with Ill Communication. The album featured the crossover modern-rock track “Sabotage” and “Sure Shot.” In 1996, Adam Yauch organized the Tibetan Freedom Concert to raise awareness of the treatment of the Tibetan people. The annual festival saw diverse performers including The Foo Fighters, Bjork, Herbie Hancock and the Fugees.
Beastie Boys also participated in the New Yorkers Against Violence Concert, which raised funds for 9/11 relief. In 2004, Beastie Boys released their fourth No. 1 album To The Five Boroughs, featuring the single “Ch-Check It Out.” The Beastie Boys returned in 2007 with the Grammy-award-winning album The Mix-up.
