“Big” Kenny Alphin and John Rich began performing together in 1998. In 2001, the duo helped create the MuzikMafia, a country music collective which consisted of Big Kenny, John Rich and fellow county musicians Gretchen Wilson and James Otto. In 2003, Big & Rich penned the song “She's a Butterfly” for Martina McBride as well as the song “Here for the Party” for Gretchen Wilson.
In 2004, Big & Rich released their own album Horse of a Different Color, which sold over 3 million copies. The album featured one of Big & Rich’s biggest hits “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy),” which gained a following due to ESPN’s use of the song for a World Series of Poker commercial. Horse of a Different Color featured appearances by Gretchen Wilson and Martina McBride.
Big & Rich released Comin’ to Your City in 2005. The album produced three singles including the title track, “Never Mind Me” and “8th of November.” Comin’ to Your City featured vocals by country legend Kris Kristofferson and Gretchen Wilson. In 2007, Big & Rich recorded a cover of John Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me” for Instant Karma: the Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur and appeared on the “We Got It Going On” for Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway album.
That same year, Big & Rich released Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace, which debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. The album’s first single “Lost in this Moment” gave Big & Rich their first No. 1 country song and featured collaborations with R&B singers Wyclef Jean and John Legend.
