Born George Alan O’Dowd on June 14, 1961 in London, it would only be a matter of time before Boy George would become a household name among pop fans. After a short, but highly successful stint with the ‘80s pop group Culture Club, Boy George came on the scene as a solo artist with his debut studio album Sold in 1987. Sold was an immediate hit in the UK, spawning the No. 1 UK single “Everything I Owe.”
In 1995, Boy George released the smash studio album Cheapness and Beauty, officially launching his popularity among an American audience. The dance hit “Same Thing in Reverse” reached No. 28 on the Billboard dance chart. In 1997, the single “Police and Thieves” was released in the US to mostly positive reviews, helping to enlarge Boy George’s fan base stateside.
Boy George has made a resurgence in the new millennium with his work as a DJ on newly released albums, such as Galaxy Mix released in 1999 and Essential Mix released in 2001. Boy George also gained recent fame for his work on the cast of Broadway’s short-lived musical Taboo. In 2007, Boy George released a set of promos and digital releases that many speculate are in promotion of an unannounced upcoming album.
