Formed in the Chicago suburb Grayslake, Illinois, the rock band Chevelle is strictly a family affair. In 1995, brothers Pete (guitars and vocals) and Sam Loeffler (drums) named their band Chevelle after their father’s favorite car, the Chevrolet Chevelle. The Loeffler Brothers chose to recruit their youngest brother Joe to play bass in 1996.The trio recorded a demo dubbed The Blue Album in 1998, which led to a deal with Squint Entertainment.
In 1999, Chevelle released their debut album Point #1, featuring the singles “Mia” and the self-titled track. The song “Point #1” entered the Top 40 of the Modern Rock charts and drew Chevelle comparisons to another hard-rock act, Tool, both for Pete Loeffler’s vocals and the stop-animation of Chevelle’s music video “Mia.” When Squint Entertainment folded, Chevelle was picked up by Epic Records.
In 2002, Chevelle released its major label debut, Wonder What’s Next. The album had two top 5 singles “The Red” and “Send the Pain Below,” which was Chevelle’s first No. 1 rock song. Wonder What’s Next sold over 1 million copies and peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200. In 2004, Chevelle released This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In), which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 but failed to sell as many copies as their previous record.
In 2006, bassist Joe Loeffler was replaced by the Loeffler Brothers’ brother-in-law Dean Bernardini. Chevelle’s new lineup released Vena Sera in 2007. The album debuted at No. 12 and featured the singles “Well Enough Alone,” “I Get It” and “The Fad.” Chevelle has toured with Finger Eleven, Evanescence and Strata in support of Vena Sera.
