If you find yourself lulled into a state of deep relaxation and contemplation, you are probably listening to Coldplay. Formed in 1998, Chris Martin (vocalist/pianist), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Guy Berryman (bass), and Will Champion (drummer/multi-instrumentalist) got their start playing at local clubs around their hometown London. Over a decade later, Coldplay has skyrocketed to fame on the strength of their groundbreaking albums.
By 2000 Coldplay had produced their first hit single “Yellow” off of the Parachutes album. During this time, Coldplay took their major influences from Radiohead and have drawn comparisons to Oasis. Coldplay’s next single “Shiver” proved equally successful and landed them a place on UK’s Top 40. The song “Trouble” off of Parachutes also earned Colplay the Mercury Music Prize in September of 2000.
Coldplay’s next album A Rush of Blood to the Head marked a confident step in a different direction musically. A Rush of Blood to the Head boasted several popular singles including “The Scientist,” “Politik,” “In My Place,” and the Grammy-winning “Clocks” – all of which earned ample play time on the radio. Colplay’s next album X & Y was also relatively successful with singles “Fix You,” “Square One,” and “Talk.”
In June 2008, Coldplay will release their highly anticipated fourth studio album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and have announced plans for a North American tour.
