Forming in the mid-1990s, Creed got its start as a quartet originally known as Naked Toddler before finally changing its name to Creed. Bandmates Scott Stapp, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall, and Scott Phillips went on to write three songs, including “One,” “Sister,” and “What’s This Life For,” that would appear on their debut album My Own Prison. Released in 1997, My Own Prison caught the attention of a handful of labels, but it was Wind Up Records that would eventually sign the up and coming band.
On the heels of My Own Prison, follow-up album Human Clay dropped in 1999, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Leadoff single “Higher” rocked the radio airwaves and eventually cracked the Top 10, helping Creed become a household name. Creed’s next single, the Grammy-winning “With Arms Wide Open,” shot to the No. 1 spot and became a favorite of fans with Creed tickets.
On the heels of Human Clay’s success, Creed released its next album Weathered, which spawned “My Sacrifice,” “Bullets,” and “One Last Breath.” “Don’t Stop Dancing” was a minor hit for the band as well. Creed broke up in June 2004, and bandmates journeyed on with solo projects and other activities. Lead vocalist Scott Stapp released The Great Divide, while the remaining band members (along with former bassist Brian Marshall) joined to form Alter Bridge.
Rumors of a Creed reunion floated around in 2008 despite dismissals from the band. Much to fans’ delight, Creed has announced a jam-packed schedule of tour dates to kick off in Summer 2009 and have a new album entitled Full Circle in the works.
