Known for their witty wordplay and playful skits, De La Soul is regarded by some as having created a hip-hop masterpiece with the release of the album 3 Feet and Rising. The major hit single “Me, Myself, and I” was the first release off of 3 Feet and Rising. The lyrics for 3 Feet and Rising focused on the topics of peace and balance. De La Soul’s next album De La Soul Is Dead took on a light and humorous sound while still attacking the violent turn to which hip-hop music was headed.
In 1993, De La Soul released their third studio album entitled Buhloone Mindstate. Buhloone Mindstate incorporated a more jazz-influenced sound as it included special appearances by jazz hard hitters Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, and Pee Wee Ellis. Buhloone Mindstate addresses the issue of the mainstream’s influence on hip-hop music as evident in the song “Pattie Dooke”.
In 1996, De La Soul released their next album Stakes Is High. Stakes Is High was produced completely by the group and featured artists Zhane, Common, and newcomer Mos Def. De La Soul later released Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump in 2000 and its follow-up album Art Official Intelligence: Bionix in 2001. De La Soul embarked on a tour in promotion of their two albums.
De La Soul released their latest album The Grind Date in 2004. The Grind Date features appearances from artists MF Doom, Ghostface Killah, and Flavor Flav. The Grind Date featured “Shopping Bags (She Got From You)” as the first release off of the album. De La Soul is currently touring with Mos Def, Nas, and A Tribe Called Quest as members of the Rock The Bells tour.
