One of the hottest Rock bands around, The Flaming Lips were founded in 1983 by brothers Wayne and Mark Coyne and bassist Michael Ivins in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After a slew of drummers and Mark Coyne’s exit, the Flaming Lips released its first album Hear It Is on the tiny imprint Pink Dust records in 1986. However the band did not win the attention of major label Warner Bros until 1990.
The Flaming Lips finally won mainstream success with its second major label album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart due to single “She Don’t Use Jelly,” featured on the popular MTV show Beavis and Butthead in 1993. In 1997, The Flaming Lips recorded the four-disc album Zaireeka. The Flaming Lips would once again win critical acclaim in 1999 with the release of The Soft Bulletin. The album was more accessible to mainstream audiences providing catchier Pop melodies.
In 2002, The Flaming Lips released its most acclaimed record to date, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The Flaming Lips used more electronic instruments and computer manipulation in the making of Yoshimi. The album's last track “Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" won the Flaming Lips a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. That same year, the Flaming Lips went on tour with Beck as his backing band in support of his album Sea Change.
The Flaming Lips released the more guitar-oriented At War with the Mystics in 2006, featuring the songs “The W.A.N.D” and the Grammy winning “The Wizard Turns On.” In 2008, the long-awaited film by lead singer Wayne Coyne Christmas on Mars was debuted at the Sasquatch! Music Festival. The Flaming Lips will be on tour in 2009 so don’t miss your chance to order your premium Flaming Lips tickets from OnlineTickets.com today!
