Since forming in 1967 in London, the rock’n’roll band Fleetwood Mac has gone through a carousel of band members and style changes in its enduring history. The one thing that has remained unchanged is the band’s rhythm section (and namesakes) of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie. Released in 1968, Fleetwood Mac’s first album Fleetwood Mac featured no-frills blues and was a No. 4 hit in the UK. A sensation across the Pond, the band followed up its debut effort with singles “Black Magic Woman” and “Need Your Love So Bad.”
In the early 1970s, Fleetwood Mac veered away from its Blues-only flavor and moved toward a more melodic rock sound with guitarist Danny Kirwan and Christine McVie in the fold. With albums Kiln House, Future Games, and Bare Trees, fans in America began to catch on to the lyrics and sound of Fleetwood Mac. While the members of Fleetwood Mac continued to change over the years, Fleetwood Mac tickets remained hot sellers. Fleetwood Mac released Mystery to Me, which spawned the iconic tune “Hypnotized,” followed by the 1974 album Heroes Are Hard to Find.
In 1975, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac. The group released Fleetwood Mac, a breakthrough hit that reached No. 1 in the U.S. Singles “Over My Head,” “Say You Love Me,” “Rhiannon,” and “Landslide” catapulted the band into mainstream success. In 1977, Fleetwood Mac released the Grammy-winning album Rumours, which soared to No. 1 on the strength of Top 10 singles “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop,” and “You Make Loving Fun.” After a worldwide tour in support of Rumours, Fleetwood Mac recorded 1979’s Tusk, which featured the song “The Ledge.”
The 1987 album Mirage featured singles “Hold Me,” “Gypsy,” and “Love in Store.” After a brief hiatus and a series of solo projects, the members of Fleetwood Mac came together for 1987’s Tango in the Night, which produced the hit songs “Little Lies,” “Seven Wonders,” and “Everywhere.” Fleetwood Mac’s The Dance was released in 1997, marking the 20th anniversary of Rumours. Fleetwood Mac has continued its reign as one of the most popular, recognizable Rock bands in history and continues to tour in 2009.
