The dreams of three young boys were birthed and nurtured on the streets of the Southside of Jamaica, Queens. 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo all lived on the same block in Queens, New York and had similar dreams of making music that would take them away from the harsh streets. The bond that would form G-Unit was born. Years of pushing music locally paid off with 50 Cent’s mainstream success. On the heels of the success of his debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ 50 Cent founded G-Unit Records.
Signing childhood friends Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo was an easy move for 50 Cent as the head of G-Unit records. Throughout the personnel changes and industry beefs, the bond shared between the three rappers has remained true and G-Unit is as strong as ever. G-Unit combined 50 Cent’s melodic flow with Lloyd Bank’s witty punch lines and Tony Yayo’s hyper style to return the grit to gangsta rap. By the time G-Unit’s debut album Beg for Mercy was released, the group had amassed a large following of fans through their popular G-Unit Radio mix tapes.
When Beg for Mercy was released Tony Yayo was in prison but 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks were joined by Nashville rapper Young Buck. When G-Unit fans were introduced to Lloyd Banks’ charismatic raspy voice and Young Buck’s gritty Southern flow, G-Unit was propelled to superstardom. Beg for Mercy shot up the charts and G-Unit’s first effort went double platinum. The members of the group took time off to record solo albums but returned in 2008 with the hit album T.O.S. (Terminate on Sight) which was also a commercial success.
50 Cent, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks are on tour to promote G-Unit’s T.O.S. G-Unit is igniting crowds nationwide with hits from Beg for Mercy including “Poppin’ Them Thangs”, “My Buddy”, “Smile”, “Stunt 101” and new hits from Terminate on Sight including “Close to Me”, “I Like the Way She Do It”, and “Rider Pt. 2”.
