Born O’Shea Jackson in June 1969 in the infamous South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles, Ice Cube led a rough childhood among street and gang violence. Ice Cube got his start in the rap scene in 1987 as one of the founding members of legendary rap group N.W.A. While Ice Cube’s time with N.W.A. was short lived, the group opened up many opportunities for Ice Cube’s burgeoning solo career.
Ice Cube’s debut studio album as a solo artist, AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, became an instant sensation within the rap community. AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted peaked on the Billboard 200 at No. 19 and spawned several rap hits, including “Who’s the Mack?” and “Endangered Species (Tales From The Darkside).”
AmeriKKa’s Most Wanted laid the foundation for Ice Cube’s legendary success during the 1990s, including his second studio album Death Certificate. As one of the most anticipated albums of 1991, Death Certificate sold over 100,000 copies in its first week alone, reaching platinum status only two months after its release. Death Certificate spawned the single “Steady Mobbin’,” which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Rap Singles chart.
