Born Felipe Coronel, Immortal Technique grew up in Harlem, New York, and would go on to become a hip hop MC and political and social activist. With lyrics centering on politics, Immortal Technique covers everything from poverty and crime, religion and racism, while making profound statements that ring loud and true in the underground hip-hop scene.
Immortal Technique released his debut album Revolutionary Vol. 1 in 2001. Though offered a recording contract by a major recording label, Immortal Technique chose to remain an independent and unrepresented artist. Revolutionary Vol. 1 was distributed at local shows and sold over 2,400 copies. The following year, Immortal Technique was coined by The Source magazine as one of the best unsigned artists of the year.
In 2003, Immortal Technique released his next album Revolutionary Vol. 2 under the Viper Records/Nature Sounds record label and distribution. The explicitly vulgar song “Obnoxious” was the third most downloaded hip-hop song in 2004, following Eminem and The Neptunes. Like his first album, Revolutionary Vol. 2 features a bilingual fusion of both Spanish and English lyrics that helped to set the background for Immortal Technique’s Peruvian-American origins.
