Founded in 1975 in the UK, Iron Maiden built up a following using high energy and pure musical talent from the guitar area of the band. Instrumental skill would remain the one constant in the band, as singers were changed several times through the band’s history. Iron Maiden’s first album – the self titled Iron Maiden – spawned modern favorites “Running Free,” “Iron Maiden,” and “Sanctuary.” The follow-up album Killers brought forward the song “Wrathchild.”
However, Iron Maiden would truly become a rock icon with the addition of vocalist Bruce Dickinson, who brought the vocal range and mastery that would define Iron Maiden’s sound. With Dickinson in the fold, Iron Maiden produced one of the greatest metal albums of all time, The Number of the Beast, featuring the song “Run to the Hills” which became a signature sound of Iron Maiden. The hit album helped propel Iron Maiden to become a big part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
Iron Maiden followed up with US & UK platinum album Piece of Mind, featuring the song “The Trooper,” and the album Powerslave soon followed with songs “2 Minutes to Midnight” and “Aces High” being fan favorites. Albums Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son broke from the Iron Maiden mold, experimenting with synthesizers. With Dickinson in and out of the band, Iron Maiden continued to release records – some more successful than others.
Iron Maiden is now on a world tour called the “Somewhere Back in Time Tour” which will focus on songs solely from the 1980s as Iron Maiden is doing its best to re-create the 1985 “World Slavery Tour” with an Egyptian inspired stage. Iron Maiden has sold over 100 million records by word of mouth and deliver some of the best live shows in music history.
