Bursting onto the music scene in the late ‘70s, Journey would soon become one of the iconic bands of the ‘80s. Journey perfected the art of the power ballad, combining a deep mix of keyboards, brilliant vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and skilled guitars. Journey had no trouble selling million of albums that spawned a catalog of hit singles – not bad for a band that started out as backup musicians!
Journey’s first album Journey was a mix of progressive rock and jazz fusion. Though it was of great quality, Journey’s musical style did not set itself up for much commercial success. After a transition of style, Journey added lead singer Steve Perry to get a fuller vocal sound. The result was the album Infinity, which gave Journey its first platinum record and hit singles “Lights” and “Wheel in the Sky.” Journey landed their first Top 20 hit with “Lovin, Touchin’, Squeezin’.”
Journey began their march to rock stardom with the album Departure which contained the iconic ‘80s rock song “Anyway You Want It” followed by the platinum album Escape, which was powered by the singles “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Who’s Crying Now,” and “Open Arms.” A follow up album entitled Frontiers spawned the singles “Separate Ways” and “Send Her My Love.”
After a few reunions, a carousel of lead singers, and various stints by the likes of music icons Randy Jackson, Ross Vallory, and Steve Smith over the years, Journey has proved their staying power thanks to Journey’s Greatest Hits album, which went 14 times platinum.
