Out of the ashes of the Yardbirds, guitarist Jimmy Page founded Led Zeppelin with the help of lead singer Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bassist John Paul Jones. The quartet briefly toured under the moniker “The New Yardbirds” but dropped the name to avoid confusion. Instead, they renamed themselves “Led Zeppelin” after the Who bassist John Entwistle’s term for a bad concert. The newly christened Led Zeppelin released its debut album in 1969.

The members of Led Zeppelin became widely known for their off-stage antics as well as their music. Between 1969 and 1971, Led Zeppelin released four self-titled albums. The most successful of the quartet was 1971’s Led Zeppelin IV, which featured the band’s most famous non-single, the eight minute “Stairway to Heaven.” In 1973, Led Zeppelin released its fifth album Houses of the Holy, which had the band dabble in other genres including reggae.

In 1975, Led Zeppelin released its first double album Physical Graffiti, which covered several genres including funk, blues and eastern orchestral rock. The most notable songs on the album were the eight-minute long “Kashmir” and the 11-minute long “In My Time of Dying.” In 1976, Led Zeppelin released the concert film “The Song Remains the Same.” The film was taped over three nights at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1973.

Led Zeppelin released its final album In Through the Out Door in 1979 and featured the song “All of my Love.” In 1980, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham died unexpectedly as Led Zeppelin had reformed to record the follow up to In Through the Out Door.
