With award-winning poet Miller Williams as her father, Lucinda Williams’ love for words was nurtured at an early age. Along with a love for writing, Lucinda Williams showed an affinity for music. At the age of six Lucinda Williams began to write and at the age of 12 Lucinda Williams learned to play the guitar. Crowds in Houston and Austin, Texas were jamming to Lucinda Williams’ blend of folk, rock and country by the time Lucinda Williams was in her early 20s.
Around 1978 Lucinda Williams settled in Jackson, Mississippi to record two albums, Ramblin’ and Happy Woman Blues. Neither album was as commercially successful as Lucinda Williams had hoped and so Lucinda Williams hit the road again, finally settling in Los Angeles, California where she developed a local following and a positive reputation. In the early 1990s Lucinda Williams’ songwriting star began to rise, and in 1994 she won a Grammy for the song “Passionate Kisses” from the 1988 album Lucinda Williams.
Lucinda Williams would receive her commercial breakthrough with her 1998 release Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. The mainstream hit earned Lucinda Williams a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Car Wheels on a Gravel Road soon went gold. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road contained the single “Can’t Let Go” which was played heavily on the radio. In 2001 Lucinda Williams won the Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance for the single “Get Right with God” from the album Essence.
