Known for a mix of Boogie, Blues, and Rock powered by a trio of guitars, Rock giants Lynyrd Skynyrd captured the American heart and never gave it back. Lynyrd Skynyrd has become a thing of legend in the southern United States, while countless bands have been influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd in every genre of southern music.
Lynyrd Skynyrd came from humble beginnings as a high school band put together by young friends. After years of playing small clubs, Lynyrd Skynyrd jumped into arena rockers with the release of 1973’s Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd album. The ballad “Free Bird” would not only give Lynyrd Skynyrd chart success but perhaps the most well-known song in southern history. “Tuesday’s Gone” would be another long-lasting anthem that had its share of covers over the years.
Lynyrd Skynyrd followed with multi-platinum album Second Helping featuring the iconic “Sweet Home Alabama” which would carry Lynyrd Skynyrd to the stratosphere. After the release of Street Survivors, tragedy struck Lynyrd Skynyrd – three band members were killed in a plane crash, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. The crash would place Lynyrd Skynyrd on the shelf for a decade.
In 1987, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited with Johnny Van Zant taking over for his late brother. Even with a history of tragedy and ever-changing lineups, Lynyrd Skynyrd has drawn in new fans – young and old – with a sound that somehow remains classic yet is always evolving. A new generation of music lovers will discover the live power of Lynyrd Skynyrd when they join Kid Rock on tour in 2009.
