Under the leadership of Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails – popularly known as NIN – sprang from the Industrial music scene of Chicago in 1988. While in the recording studio, Reznor found it difficult to impart his musical vision on other musicians. Because of this, Reznor took it upon himself to record his music on his own, playing every instrument but the drums, and fusing together classic Industrial and modern rock.
Pretty Hate Machine, released in 1989, put Nine Inch Nails on the map. The strength of the album were the singles “Head Like a Hole”, “Down In It”, and “Sin”. In spite of being released independently, Pretty Hate Machine went on to go platinum. On the back of these singles and a stage show unlike any other, NIN’s status in the rock-music scene began to grow.
Widely regarded as the best album in Nine Inch Nails history, The Downward Spiral was released in 1994. Tracks like “Closer” and “Piggy” were central to making The Downward Spiral NIN’s biggest record to date, but “Hurt” would go on to be perhaps the most iconic song of Reznor’s career. “Hurt” would be the subject of many covers, the most notable being one by Johnny Cash that was the basis for the last music video of Cash’s life and career.
In Summer 2008, Nine Inch Nails is bringing its famed stage show on tour throughout the United States. With music that is both modern and a throwback to the days of Industrial and the Wax Trax scene, Nine Inch Nails is looking to shock an entire new generation of fans and to give their longtime fans a taste of their youth.
