As part of the ‘80s rap duo Eric B & Rakim, Rakim was launched into superstardom with a platinum debut studio album and two gold follow-up studio albums. After Eric B & Rakim’s tumultuous breakup, Rakim went on hiatus for a five-year period before eventually releasing his debut solo studio album The 18th Letter in 1997.
Rakim released his second studio album The Master in 1999, spawning hits such as “Strong Island” and “When I Be on Tha Mic.” The Master failed to garner the amount of success as Rakim’s highly acclaimed debut album The 18th Letter. In 2000, Rakim signed on to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records and eventually was featured on various albums including Eminem’s 8 Mile soundtrack before leaving the label without a new studio album.
After an almost 10-year hiatus, Rakim officially confirmed that his third studio album The Seventh Seal is slated for release sometime in 2008. The Seventh Seal will feature many of the songs produced and recorded during Rakim’s year with both the Aftermath and Dreamworks recording companies.
