First picking up an accordion at the age of six, Ramon Ayala – the son of musician Ramon Cobarrubias – was surrounded by music while growing up. In the early ‘60s, a teenaged Ramon Ayala and Cornelio Reyna paired up to form Los Relampagos Del Norte. The duo helped to pioneer modern conjunto music during a time when accordion-heavy groups were not yet prominent in Northern Mexican music. The group’s distinctive sound was an instant hit north of the Rio Grande and would soon win over audiences all across Mexico by decade’s end.

After 20 albums and a slew of hit songs such as “Tengo Miedo,” “El Disgusto,” and “Mi Tesoro” with Los Relampagos Del Norte, Cornelio Reyna would pursue a career in mariachi music. Ramon Ayala’s next venture would be the band known as Ramon Ayala y Sus Bravos Del Norte in 1971. Singer Antonio Sauceda joined the accordion-playing Ayala, who would soon be back on top of the norteño music scene. However, with the departure of Sauceda, Ramon Ayala y Sus Bravos Del Norte would need to bring a new lead singer on board.

Eliseo Robles answered the call; together Robles and Ayala helped to further shape the norteño sound and style. The duo spawned the hit songs “Un Rinconcito En El Cielo” and “Tragos Amargos.” In the mid-1980s, Ramon Ayala again was left without a lead singer. Antonio Coronado stepped in, and the he and Ayala recorded eight albums before the duo dissolved in 1992. A year later, Ramon Ayala would team up with his 5th (and current) lead singer, Mario Marichalar.

Despite a carousel of lead singers throughout his over four-decade-long history, Ramon Ayala continues to influence generations that have come after him.
