REO Speedwagon got its start in 1967 when founding members Neal Doughty and roommate Alan Gratzer decided to jam together, playing gigs at local campus bars. After a carousel of personnel changes – including the addition of guitarist Gary Richrath in 1970 – and subsequent surging popularity in the Midwest, REO Speedwagon would release its first record REO Speedwagon in 1971, which spawned the popular track “157 Riverside Avenue.”
The REO Speedwagon lineup, aside from lead-vocalist changes, remained largely intact for the band’s first three albums. Lead vocalist Kevin Cronin replaced Terry Luttrell and recorded one album with REO Speedwagon in 1972 before being replaced by Michael Bryan Murphy, who recorded a couple of albums with the band, Lost in a Dream and This Time We Mean It. Back in the fold in 1976, Kevin Cronin would record the album R.E.O. with the band.
By Fall 1980, REO Speedwagon was poised for mainstream success with their release of Hi Infidelity, which featured a shift from hard rock to a more pop feel. Hi Infidelity charted four hit songs: the No. 1 “Keep on Loving You,” “Take it on the Run,” “In Your Letter,” and “Don’t Let Him Go.” REO Speedwagon kept on rolling with the 1982 album Good Trouble and the 1984 album Wheels are Turnin’. It seemed fans everywhere knew the lyrics to songs like “Keep the Fire Burnin’,” “Sweet Time,” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”
With 15 studio albums, a slew of chart toppers, and a history of packing in arenas during every tour, REO Speedwagon is one of the most recognizable bands to come out of the ‘80s. After releasing Find Your Own Way Home – the band’s first album since 1996, REO Speedwagon is back on tour with its catalog of new material and classic rock’n’roll hits along for the ride.
