The indie rock trio Sick Puppies was formed in Sydney, Australia in 1997. Vocalist Shimon Moore and bassist Emma Anzai met while in high school and bonded over a love of the Australian rock bands Silverchair and Living End. By 1999, drummer Chris Mileski had joined the group. That same year Sick Puppies released the unique Dog's Breakfast EP, notable because it featured bassist Emma Anzai on vocals.
In 2000, Sick Puppies won Australian radio network Triple J’s “Unearthed” contest with their song “Nothing Really Matters.” The song was included on the Sick Puppies’ 2001 full-length debut album Welcome to the Real World. The album was only released in Australia and included other such notable songs as “Every Day” and “Something Different.” At the same time, Sick Puppies’ cover of the Destiny’s Child song “Say My Name” was becoming a hit among users on peer-to-peer networks.
In 2006, Sick Puppies’ frontman Shimon Moore created a video of Australian performance artist Juan Mann during his “Free Hugs” campaign at a shopping mall. The video contained the Sick Puppies’ song “All the Same.” The video became a YouTube sensation with over 10 million views. Because of the internet video, Sick Puppies won the attention of US record labels.
Sick Puppies eventually signed with Virgin records, who released the Sick Puppies’ second album Dressed Up As Life in 2007. The album peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The lead single “All The Same” became a Top 10 mainstream rock hit and was followed by the singles “My World” and “What Are You Looking For.” Sick Puppies fans can catch the band on its latest concert tour.
