When Berry Gordy started Tamla Records, among his first signees was a young group from Detroit called The Miracles. Front man and founder of the Miracles, William “Smokey” Robinson became the foundation of Tamla Records which was later reincorporated as Motown. The 1960 hit “Shop Around” was Motown’s first hit, and the first big hit of The Miracles’ career. The Miracles stacked up multiple hits over the years including “I Second That Emotion”, “Who’s Loving You” and “The Tracks of My Tears”.
After leaving The Miracles to focus on his work as Motown’s vice president, Smokey Robinson launched a solo career. The 1975 hit single “Baby That’s Backatcha” catapulted Smokey Robinson to success which continued with hits including “Cruisin’”, “Being With You” and “Ebony Eyes”, which featured Smokey Robinson and Rick James.
