Before the flash-in-the-pan Pop-Punk explosion of the early 21st century or the runaway fame of the current Emo style, Taking Back Sunday carved its own mark into the weathered and tattooed hide of the underground New Jersey Punk scene. With Alternative Rock, old-school Punk, and the fledgling genre of Emo in their repertoire, Taking Back Sunday brought something new to listeners. Debut indie album Tell Your Friends did well without any kind of label support thanks to songs “Cute Without the E (Cut From the Team)” and “You’re So Last Summer”.
When 2004 album Where You Want to Be was released, the time of Nu-Metal had passed, and the world was ready to embrace Punk again. While initially friendlier bands would cash in on the Pop-Punk style of music, the market would quickly abandon the genre after one year. Taking Back Sunday benefited from both Pop-Punk and the growing interest in Emo, going from local band to the proud owners of a gold record. Singles “A Decade Under the Influence” and “This Photograph is Proof (I Know You Know)” helped make Taking Back Sunday stars.
The major labels came calling and Taking Back Sunday landed a big record deal. Growing as men and as a band, Taking Back Sunday released its most powerful work yet in 2005 album Louder Now. Single “MakeDamnSure” was the breakout radio hit and sold Taking Back Sunday tickets and albums to new fans. Four more singles from Louder Now would follow, but the evolution of Taking Back Sunday as live performers really solidified the band as one of the up-and-coming Punk acts.
With numerous soundtrack appearances to its credit and a growing base of young fans, Taking Back Sunday is ready to rule 2009 with a new tour and album. Fans have been waiting a long time for album New Again, and early singles like “Carpathia” have only fueled the fire. With a boatload of tour dates that go from small clubs to the massive Bamboozled festival, Taking Back Sunday will have scheduled gigs great and small in 2009.
