The Cure has stood the test of time, expertly avoiding a flurry of passing musical trends over the years. Founded by wild-haired singer/songwriter Robert Smith in post-punk Britain in 1976, The Cure forged their own place in music history, building upon the punk genre by adding deeper lyrics and a slightly softer and complex edge along with memorable instrumentals.
In 1979, The Cure’s first album Three Imaginary Boys – later released in the US as Boys Don’t Cry – featured “Boys Don’t Cry” – The Cure’s signature song. The Cure’s second album Seventeen Seconds would establish The Cure’s trademark moody and sometimes depressing aura. Faith was the next album and continued the dark streak that Seventeen Seconds began. The Cure released their darkest album with Pornography in 1982. The trilogy of albums would mark The Cure as the fathers of Gothic Rock.
After a band break up, The Cure shifted musical direction away from darkness and more to a pop feel. The result was single a successful album Japanese Warriors followed by The Top, which gave The Cure their first taste of US chart success. The albums The Head on the Door and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me also helped catapult The Cure to international fame. The 1989 album Disintegration featured the No. 1 single "Fascination Street" and brought The Cure to the mainstream.
With single “Friday in Love” the Cure landed another hit album with 1992’s Wish, while the critically acclaimed Bloodflowers dropped in 2000. With a 13th album on the horizon and a 2008 tour underway, The Cure has established itself as one of the longest-lasting Alternative Rock bands of all time.
