Tony Bennett was discovered by comedian Bob Hope in 1949 while performing in Greenwich Village. Debuting his first single “Because of You” in 1951, Tony Bennett received his first No. 1 hit which stayed on the charts for 10 weeks. Tony Bennett’s follow up single “Cold, Cold Heart” established him as a teenage favorite and a household name. In 1957 Tony Bennett decided to focus his music on jazz, citing Nate King Cole and Bing Crosby as his idols.
The 1960s brought Tony Bennett much success, including numerous Grammy awards and signature songs “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “The Way You Look Tonight” and “Fly Me To The Moon”. After an unsuccessful attempt to convert to contemporary rock, Tony Bennett found himself without a recording contract. Tony Bennett’s luck changed in the early ‘90s when his son and now manager started booking Tony Bennett events at local colleges and MTV guest spots where he reached a new generation of fans and got away form the Vegas stigma.
