Founded by former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale after his previous band broke up, Whitesnake flavored its first few albums with a Blues-Rock sound. Later, Whitesnake moved more into the Glam Metal scene as the 1980s began and Whitesnake established its sound. The lineup would change often with David Coverdale often working with fellow Deep Purple alumni.
Whitesnake’s first studio album Snakebite contained the classic song and setlist staple “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City.” Whitesnake was a big band in the UK but capturing U.S. fame would take a little longer for the rockers. Album Ready an’ Willing was the international breakthrough that Whitesnake was looking for with the single “Fool for Your Loving” garnering much attention. Album Slide It In would eventually go double platinum.
Whitesnake took the U.S. by storm with album Whitesnake, which reached No. 2 on the charts. No. 1 single “Here I Go Again” and No. 2 “Is This Love” made Whitesnake MTV and radio favorites. Guitar legend Steve Vai joined Whitesnake for the triple-platinum follow up Slip of the Tongue. The video for “The Deeper the Love” featured Tawny Kitaen in perhaps the best known video moment of the 1980s. While on top, the members of Whitesnake took a long hiatus with two returns in 1994 and 1997-98.
Whitesnake reunited in 2002 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Recent interest in Glam Metal and a demand for Whitesnake specifically kept Whitesnake together and touring. After several live albums and collections, Whitesnake released studio album Good to be Bad in 2008. Whitesnake teamed up with Def Leppard to make a super tour in 2008, but no tour before could match Whitesnake’s 2009 U.S. tour, which will have Whitesnake co-headlining with Judas Priest.
