In 1981, Prince carefully crafted the Time out of an existing Minneapolis funk-pop group, Flyte Tyme. The Time included drummer Jellybean Johnson, keyboardists Jimmy Jam and Monte Moir, bassist Terry Lewis, guitarist Jesse Johnson, hype man Jerome Benton and vocalist Morris Day. That same year, The Time released its first self-titled album, which was recorded entirely by Prince and Morris Day on vocals. The album produced three hits “Get It Up,” which peaked at No. 6 on the R&B chart, “Cool” and “Girl.”
In 1982, The Time released What Time Is It, which had become a popular catchphrase for the band. The album featured the Time’s signature funk-pop mixed with rock’n’roll. Once again, Prince wrote and recorded all of the songs on the Time’s album himself, with assistance from lead singer Morris Day. What Time Is It produced three singles “777-9311,” which peaked at No. 2 on the R&B chart, “The Walk” and “Gigolos Get Lonely Too.”
After being stranded in Atlanta and unable to make the Time’s scheduled performance in San Antonio, keyboardist Jimmy Jam and bassist Terry Lewis were fired and replaced by Mark Cardenes and Jerry Hubbard. The Time released Ice Cream Castle in 1984, producing the hits “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.” Both songs were featured in the Prince movie Purple Rain. Tensions inside the Time prompted the band to break up in 1985.
In 1990, The Time reunited and released the album Pandemonium. The lead single “Jerk Out” scored the Time its first No. 1 R&B single. The album features Prince and songs written and performed by members of the Time. While the group disbanded after the album’s release, the Time has reunited yet again for a daily engagement at the Flamingo in Las Vegas.
