The University of Akron Zips campus boasts 15 varsity sports teams, all of which are part of the huge upswing in sports in the last few years. Head coach J.D. Brookhart brings NFL coaching experience to the Akron Zips football team, and more importantly a new culture of winning. In his second year at the helm, the Akron Zips won the MAC Championship and played in the Motor City Bowl in 2005 – both were firsts for the Akron Zips. With the O-Line gelling and more experience at the QB position, the MAC Title looks to be in reach. The historic Rubber Bowl has been the home of the Akron Zips for more than 68 years and has hosted the biggest crowds of Blue and Gold fans in its history in the past few years.
The Akron Zips basketball team has also hit its stride recently thanks to head coach Keith Dambrot. With a combined 92-38 record in four years, the Akron Zips have earned two trips to the NIT, reaching the second round both times. The Akron Zips will return all their core players for the 2008-09 campaign. With both the MAC and NIT titles easily in reach, fans are sure to pack the James A. Rhodes Arena night after night.
