The University of Cincinnati boasts 18 varsity sports teams, including soccer, baseball, golf, and of course football and basketball. The University of Cincinnati’s mascot has been the Bearcat since 1914. The 2008 Bearcats baseball team advanced in the Big East tournament before losing to rival Louisville. Since moving to the Big East Conference in 2005, the Cincinnati Bearcats have proven capable of holding their own in Nippert Stadium, the home of Bearcats football, and Fifth Third Arena, the home of Bearcats basketball.
In 2007, Bearcats fans at Nippert Stadium watched Coach Brian Kelly – named 2007 Coach of the Year – lead the Bearcats to an impressive 9-3 record. Last season ended on a high-note as Bearcats QB Ben Mauk orchestrated a 31-21 victory over Southern Mississippi in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. In 2008, fans will watch the Cincinnati Bearcats battle rivals the University of Pittsburg Panthers and the University of Louisville Cardinals. Witness All-Americans Terrill Byrd, Kevin Huber, and Mike Mickens lead the Bearcats to another inspiring season!
On the hardwood at Fifth Third Arena, upwards of 13,000 dedicated fans and followers watched as Coach Mick Cronin, one of the NCAA’s young, up-and-coming coaches, steer his Bearcats basketball team to a 13-18 record. Fans enjoyed electrifying upset victories against No. 19 Villanova and No. 15 Pittsburgh Panthers. The Bearcats have added recruits Dion Dixon and Steven Toyloy to help the Bearcats avenge their loss against rival Xavier University in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout.
