The University of Pittsburgh is one of the Midwest’s premiere schools. The Pittsburgh Panthers’ reign stretches across 17 varsity teams including gymnastics, track and field, and swimming and diving. Pittsburgh Panther football is the University of Pittsburgh’s claim to fame, officially holding nine National Championships. Pittsburgh Panthers football takes place in Heinz Field. The Pitt Panthers hold a handful of rivalries with varying schools but the most notable is against West Virginia State University. In one of the oldest rivalries in college football, the Pitt Panthers and WVU Mountaineers continue a century-old rivalry at the annual Backyard Brawl.
The University of Pittsburgh has celebrated over 100 years of basketball successful in both men’s and women’s basketball. Among the numerous achievements Panthers basketball has earned are three Big East season championships, four “Sweet Sixteen” appearances, and seven consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.
