The Mighty Mustangs are thundering toward victory once again during the 2008-09 season. Southern Methodist University fields a wide array of varsity sports including football and volleyball, along with men’s and women’s basketball, track and field, cross country, swimming and diving, golf, tennis, rowing and more! Over the SMU Mustangs’ storied history, it has been the football and basketball teams that have brought the school much notoriety.
The 2007 season saw the Mustangs football team limp to an injury laden 1-11 record. New head coach June Jones faces the challenge of trying to turn the program around. Jones is the fifth coach to attempt to do so since the NCAA tried to cut the program in 1987. Jones hopes that either Bo Levi Mitchell or Braden Smith will prove capable of running his run-and-shoot offense. Mustangs’ fans hope the freshmen will step up also because they are ready to get rowdy in Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
In his second season, Matt Doherty coached his young Mustangs basketball team to a 10-20 record. Doherty and fans knew that they would have to endure a tough season in 2007-08. Doherty, who comes from a winning tradition at North Carolina, hopes that one of his seven sophomores can step up and fill the gap left by their most productive player, Jon Killen. Fans hope so too as they gear up to make Moody Coliseum a tough arena for opponents!
After disappointing showings from both the football and basketball teams, SMU Mustangs fans are eager to see what new heights the Mustangs might reach. SMU Mustangs tickets invite all those who bleed red and blue to come out with their “Pony Ears” up and salute the Mighty Mustangs as they ride onto the field and court behind their faithful mascot Peruna!
