The Coyotes were founded in 1972 as the Winnipeg Jets, and after joining the NHL in 1979 they moved to Phoenix in 1996. A name change soon followed as the Jets became the Phoenix Coyotes. The Phoenix Coyotes are part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference where tough teams like Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks often dominate, so stiff competition is guaranteed.
The Phoenix Coyotes traded defensemen Nick Boynton, Keith Ballard and a second-round pick for Florida Panthers’ captain Olli Jokinen. Olli Jokinen has proved to be one of the best players in the NHL, and his ability to pass and assist other players is exquisite. First-round picks Mikkel Boedker and Viktor Tikhonov signed entry-level contracts with the club. Mikkel Boedker, 18, was picked in the No. 8 spot in the draft and is also a World Junior Champion, while Viktor Tikhonov was an All-Star player in the same competition.
